Waste Management

Health Sciences Centre (HSC)

Confidential Waste

The Confidential Waste Program is now fully implemented at all Hamilton Health Sciences acute care sites.  Our housekeeping provider, Crothall Healthcare, will no longer be picking up boxes of confidential waste from departments that request them.  To ensure the chain of custody for confidential information is maintained, it is critical that each person who creates confidential information is responsible for the disposal of the waste into a console or bin.  Desktop cardboard containers are available for pick up from the HSC mail room.

If you have large volumes of confidential waste from purging, you must request a locked wheeled tote through the Service Response Center (SRC) at (905) 521-2100 ext. 73805 or ext. 73491. This is a special service and must be booked 10 business days in advance of regular Shred-It service dates. The SRC will relay your information to the site. To ensure the chain of custody for confidential information, department staff must dispose of the information in the tote. The locked tote will be dropped off and picked up by Shred-It.

All sites have placements of Shred-It bins (totes), consoles and mini consoles. We will continue to make minor adjustments to placements as necessary. Please note that service is bi-weekly for some locations where volumes of confidential information do not justify weekly service.

  • For confidential waste assistance, please call (905) 521-2100 ext. 73805.
  • Regular service date is Friday. Should Friday be a holiday, the following Monday will be the service date.

Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Learning and Discovery

For pick up of confidential waste in Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Learning and Discovery (MDCL) offices, you will need to submit a service request through Mosaic. Confidential waste must be placed in a cardboard box, taped shut and clearly marked “Confidential Waste”.

Campus Recycling

To continue towards increasing the percentage of diverted waste on campus, McMaster University has developed a waste reduction plan and a new waste labeling criteria aimed at enhancing waste diversion and reducing cross-contamination between different types of recycled waste. Visit the Facility Services website to learn more.
